With the world’s eyes on Afghanistan, how does the Taliban represent Islam?

With the newly declared Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, people will be asking if the actions of the new leadership are a representation or a mutation of Islam.

I had left this forum, but I came back to ask this question as it would seem to me to be a vital one in the light of unfolding events.

With Afghanistan supplying 90% of the worlds heroin, and 95% of the European supply, will this regime that bans alcohol rid the world of this poison that kills people every day?

Do people stand with or denounce the regime?

I'm in Europe and I know a woman from Afganistan. She's and intelligent, smartly dressed woman in her early forties and moved with her husband about twenty years ago to have a better life. She showed me photos of what it was like in Afganistan in the 1960s, women wore short mini dresses and no head coverings. They could have a drivers licence and go to University. She has tried many times to get her mum out of the country to no avail, especially with the recent corona lockdowns. She has four children and has never let them go to Afganistan in case they were stolen to be sold. She says that all the problems were from the Taliban and it is a very different philosophy they (the Taliban) go by rather than the Muslim ideas of kindness to all that she was brought up with. She doesn't like living in Europe and really misses her family and culture and lifestyle. But with the current developments, maybe she won't ever be able to go back.

What I have been wondering is what the wider Muslim world make of the Taliban. To apply a Christian context, if the US had been taken over by snake handlers who deliberately misread certain sections of the Bible, I would point out their errors and distance myself from them.

In the same spirit, in what way will a society built on a particular interpretation of Islam be perceived by Muslims in the wider world? Is the Taliban interpretation of Muhammad’s writings and the Hadith correct or dumb?

Is Sharia Law a good thing that will bring true freedom and blessing to a country, or a 7th Century societal curse that will deliver oppression and sorrow?

I guess the world is waiting and watching.

To be fair heroin started flooding this country in 2002 - after the Americans took over Afghanistan. It’s been flooding in ever since with American troops “guarding” poppy fields instead of setting them on fire.

I think the narrative that the Taliban is going to take over Afghanistan is largely bullsh*t. No empire has ever been able to take over that region because it’s composed of disjointed city states, each with their own culture, language, disconnected by rugged terrain and impassable mountains. sometimes there will only be one road between them, and if city a doesn’t like what city b is dishing out, all they have to do is blow up a bridge and they’re completely disconnected until the bridge is rebuilt.
