I remember in the Dark Ages when we read books, and 451F (was that Bradbury?) seemed to me a wild fantasy when I was a child surrounded by books.
Then there was a book which I think was called Theranos Syndrome which had as a big part of its plot the forced sexualization of children. I think I'm remembering that right. And I always wondered back then (this was in my undergrad years), "Why in the holy hell are we reading this trash?"
When I dabbled in the graduate school at a well-known diploma mill, one professor I distinctly recall was trying to teach a class in Creative Writing (which I had taken many many years before as both an undergrad and in my first round of grad school) but her version of Marxist-Feminist theory was beyond the pale.
More trash (mostly perverted homosexual garbage) and I asked her point blank, "Why are you forcing us to read this garbage when there are oh-so-many better examples of good creative writing?" and I cited many authors, Pulitzer and Nobel winners, and many other well-known authors, that put her selections to shame.
She was livid that I DARED question her AUTHORITY. She couldn't answer my question because I was just a big bad boogie old man. She tried to fail me. She refused to critique my papers (she just gave me an F without explanation). I prevailed with the "committee" who FORCED her to approve my thesis and grade my papers properly. She was some kind of twenty-something militant lesbian adjunct from Serbia. She did not know that I was already a retired professor, just taking another degree to stave off boredom. She didn't come back the next semester.
Score one for the good guys. Anyway, this stuff has been smoldering for a long, long time. It was beginning in the 1960s. It came to fruition (IMHO) in the late 1970s and through the 1980s. It grew and formed deep roots in the 1990s. It really blossomed in the 21st c. with the fertilizer of the corporate internet. Once upon a time, when it was barely beyond ARPAnet, it had its use. Now its just television for pornography.
It would be interesting to see how it all pans out. But I'll be long gone by then. Good luck to ya. You're going to need it.
