I was listening to Michael Jackson's Thriller the album last night and realized how dull today's pop stars are compared to stars in 80s and early 90s. Taylor is rn the biggest artist of this generation but she is so dull both musically and lyrically. All she ever writes about is breakups and relationships or her feuds with famous people. Compare that to MJ who was writing songs about racism, bullying/toxic masculinity, climate change, and world peace. Even Madonna used to be better than Taylor. She spoke about many social issues of her time and faced backlash for it. Also she had better sounding music even though I don't personally like that woman. Nowadays we have Beyonce who is supposed to be this socially conscious musician but even her activism feels so performative.
I guess the change happened after Britney Spears. I feel bad for the woman but she is the perfect example of pop mediocrity. She didn't write her own songs, is not a good singer and relied heavily on her sex appeal to sell records. Pop music declined after music labels started to push industry plants like Britney who could not write their own music and relied on their sex appeal to sell records. Now we have the likes of Taylor Swift who writes lyrics that could fit in a gossip magazine and sells records by making her fans invested in her personal life.
