I think you have to go back to the original work watkin tudor jones did in the early years before Die Antwoord, his other bands the original evergreen, The constructus corporation, Max Normal, Max Normal.tv , and some self titled albums under watkin tudor jones, which i think is some of the best stuff hes done to date. These two are not some street thugs out of south africa but rather the product of middle class white south african families who attended some art college a number of years ago.WTJ's current persona is even stolen from an image online that i used to have and subsequently lost. so it is hardly original as much of what he does is borrowing content from other sources and mish mashing it together, which is pretty much the essence of hip hop.

His original music is very anti mainstream and very intelligent. I could explain it but you kind of have to listen to it for yourself if you want to go back that far. As far as I see it, I'm not a fan of their newest stuff. it seems forced and contrived. I think there's a very real possibility that WTJ understands whats needed to be successful in this industry and make money so he panders to the deep pockets of the powers that be to ensure he gets airtime and exposure. from what Ive heard and read and heard him say in interviews and the content of his earlier muisic, I believe the man to be more buddhist and a zen practitioner than anything else. but I obviously don't know enough about him to be sure,

I think people forget the basics VC has put forth. when they signed with interscope, they shortly after terminated their contract and subsequently released tracks heavily critical of the label. im not sure what label they are under now if any, but they are definitely forging their own path, albeit one that is lined with familiar imagery. I personally think Watkin is smart enough to understand whats required to make money in the industry, if he truly believes it is another matter.

This cross clearly pays homage to Satan of the Bible, but why would anyone want to worship Satan, a purely negative entity? If you want to rebel do you do this by using a symbol that makes a mockery of a god you claim to believe you don't believe in? What is gained for these people personally by mocking the Christians? I have never been a fan of Christianity. Teachers at school tried to indoctrinate me as a child and the whole concept of -"believe in God and you will get a reward at the end" never made sense to me. I considered christians narrowminded, they deemed everything unpleasant "satanic"...
Anyways, people can believe what they want, I believe in a God and possibly all religions point to this God, but in my eyes the religions have been corrupted.
You ask why they use the imagery of Satan, it is easy. Satan is strife, raw emotion, the rebel who dare speak up against the omnipotent, despite the consequenses. Satan can represent freedom.
The Christians converted my ancestors with the sword...it made me hate everything Christian for a while, and I myself enjoyed satanic imagery.
I am older and a bit more wise now, and do not waste energy on hate. But understand that the religions are easy to hate because they demand (very often) you to think, behave and look a certain way, it puts shackles on people, this is why people turn to satanic symbolism.

They physically repulse me. They came to town not too long ago and their show sold out. I think it says a lot about our society when you realize how popular they are. I think it’s sad when young people just write off their clearly demonic influence as “shock value” or “edgy”.
